An ambitious penguin arrives at flight school with visions of success. Teacher and Flamingo stifle their doubts and patiently include him until the truth can no longer be denied: “I’m sorry, birdie,” said Teacher. “Penguins just aren’t built to fly.” Instead of reinforcing the standard “everyone is special,” Teacher and Flamingo find a way to give him a satisfying experience. This is a story of hope, encouragement, determination, compassion, and practical limitations. Delightfully illustrated with watercolor and pencil in a warm palette. This would be appropriate reading for back-to-school, penguins, birds, stories, or anyone who dreams of flying.
