Hickory Dickory Dog by Alison Murray

hickoryHickory Dickory Dog by Alison Murray. Candlewick, 2014 (first published in U.K. in 2012), 32 pages.

Murray applies her signature style in this bold, colorful picture book. Using the familiar nursery rhyme, “Hickory Dickory Dock,” Murray tells the story of a young boy and his dog throughout the course of a typical day—from waking up in the morning, through school and play, until bedtime at night. The clock hands move to show times of day. The nursery rhyme text adapts cleverly to their adventures, and Rufus (the dog) adds in a bit of levity. A gentle and delightful read-aloud for those in preschool and kindergarten, especially when they begin learning to tell time.
