Number One Sam by Greg Pizzoli. Disney-Hyperion, 2014. 32 pages.

Pizzoli’s humorous The Watermelon Seed won the Geisel Award, which is devoted to the best early readers published in a given year. Number One Sam contains the same style of illustrations in a limited but bold palette that will easily engage young readers. The text in this book, though, is not humorous. Rather, Number One Sam teaches a gentle lesson about winning and losing: having a bad attitude about winning and losing contests can also lead to winning—or losing—friends. A good reminder for children just starting their school careers, this book works well as a read-aloud and an early reader.
