The Spider (Disgusting Creatures) by Elise Gravel. Tundra Books, 2015. 32 pages.

Reading Level: Picture Books, ages 4-8

Recommended for: Ages 4-8

Children are fascinated by bugs and spiders, often bringing them to their more squeamish parents for a closer look. And there are plenty of picture books on these fascinating small carnivores of the animal world. Gravel’s new series, Disgusting Creatures, is offering a different take, a more irreverent and silly take on these little creatures. Quirky cartoon-style drawings show a spider talking to the reader, saying silly things while simultaneously offering up actual factual information. A fun change of pace from most, more serious nonfiction books on spiders, this book will have its young readers giggling even as they learn. Bonus: the parents won’t be grossed out either because the pictures are not lifelike at all. This book is fun for introducing a study on spiders or simply as a picture book.
