The Cowboy is a German imprint that, like Holiday House’s other I Like to Read books, is shaped more like a picture book than the easy reader series books like Henry and Mudge. These stand alone titles are a nice addition to the easy reader landscape, and they work well for new readers due to their short length, large size, and engaging storylines. In The Cowboy, a young girl and her dog, Toto, head to the beach for some fun in the sun. On the way, she notices a boy in a silly cowboy hat. When Toto gets in trouble in the surf, who should come to the rescue but the boy… in his beautiful cowboy hat. Cute and engaging, look for this one if you have young cowboys or cowgirls in your house, particularly if your new readers are on the young side.
