Reading Level: Picture Books, ages 0-4 (plus older readers—see review)

Recommended for: All ages

Ah! by Géraldine Collet is a French import about two little rabbits…and two little spiders. A little rabbit, following cryptic signs, runs into a spider. Eek! He busily tries to rid himself of said spider and collapses under a cooling leaf to rest from his labors. Suddenly spying a cute little girl rabbit, he recovers his energy enough to bring her a little flower. The spider, not one to miss a free ride, has secretly stowed away on the rabbit’s head. This secret passenger is not well received by the girl rabbit (girls are not known to relish spiders in their love bouquets!), but the final spread causes readers to question: maybe this story is really about the two spiders! Essentially a humorous little love story, it may take American readers a second reading to fully appreciate its nuances. Text is minimal, and, as of the writing of this review, is available in French on Amazon as well as in English. French teachers, take note! This would make a fun translation activity for new French students of any age.
